The Pediatric Nephrology Division at the University of Virginia provides state-of-the-art diagnosis and management for infants, children, and adolescents with all forms of congenital and acquired renal (kidney) disease, electrolyte disorders, and hypertension (high blood pressure).   A new clinic (Clinic for Cardiovascular Health) provides comprehensive care for patients with concerns of obesity, hyperlipidemia (cholesterol disorders), early diabetes, and hypertension.  Home and inpatient dialysis procedures and pediatric renal transplantation are a significant aspect of our clinical activities.  We utilize an integrated approach to care in which doctors (including our colleagues in pediatric urology and pediatric surgery), nurses, social workers, nutritionists and school specialists work together to attend to the physical, emotional, social and economical needs of the child and their family.  Common issues seen in our practice include hematuria (blood in the urine), proteinuria (protein in the urine), kidney inflammations or infections, urinary tract defects, blockages or infections, sodium, potassium, phosphate or acid imbalances, hypertension, high cholesterol, kidney insufficiency or failure, cystic kidney diseases, and kidney transplantation.
