Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition

The Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition cares for children who suffer from intestinal, liver, and nutritional disorders.   This includes children who suffer from Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, acute and chronic hepatitis, jaundice, metabolic liver disease, short bowel syndrome, chronic diarrhea, chronic and/or recurrent abdominal pain, malnutrition, growth failure, gastroesophageal reflux, recurrent vomiting, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic constipation, encopresis, intestinal bleeding, ulcer disease and swallowing disorders. 

We regularly perform upper and lower endoscopic procedures including gastrostomy placement and polypectomy.

Clinic hours and directions

Children are seen on the Fourth Floor of the Primary Care Center at the University of Virginia Medical Center.   Regularly scheduled clinic hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Fridays between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Research Interests

Division members have ongoing research projects examining the causes and treatment of childhood constipation and encopresis, the use of the Internet as a means of delivering treatment interventions for childhood encopresis, the epidemiology and etiology of inflammatory bowel diseases in children, and the use of information systems and information technology to promote clinical care, patient safety, and professional and consumer education.
