Environmental Adjustments

The clinician should educate the family regarding appropriate environmental adjustments. These may include:

  • putting breakables away
  • providing an appropriate safe place for the child to be active
  • leaving the child at home with a sitter instead of attending events that require long periods of contained behavior
  • locking up unsafe items (e.g. guns and matches)
  • removing temptations

A handout available in this module, The Child with AD/HD - Modifying the Classroom, describes appropriate environmental adjustments in the child's classroom.
