Newborns delivered at the University of Virginia are cared for in the Newborn Nursery. The nursery is located on the 8th floor of the University Hospital, adjacent to Labor and Delivery. The nursery is staffed by general pediatricians as well as neonatologists (doctors who have specialized training in the care of newborns). We offer support in breast feeding as well as providing education in the care of the newborn and, if desired, classes in infant CPR.

This high acuity, mixed medical and surgical intensive care unit receives approximately 700-800 admissions per year, about 60% medical and 40% surgical. The broad range of pediatric critical illness from airway problems to transplantation is seen. Click on the link to learn more about the PICU.
