Facilities and Resources for Cardiology Training
Outpatient Clinics
Approximately 2,500 outpatient evaluations are performed yearly at UVA and its outlying clinics. In addition to a weekly outpatient clinic, fellows attend field clinics throughout Virginia.
Echocardiography Laboratory
Approximately 4,000 transthoracic and transesophageal M-mode, two-dimensional and Doppler echocardiograms are performed in the Pediatric Noninvasive Laboratory, as well as the intensive care units and operating rooms. Facilities are available for exercise testing, 24-hour continuous ambulatory studies, electrocardiographic monitoring, and nuclear cardiology studies. Telemedicine resources are utilized regularly by our community physicians, and provide additional opportunity to review echocardiograms.
MRI
New facilities for cardiac MRI and MR angiograms are available.
Cardiac Catheterization
Cardiac catheterizations are performed in a digital laboratory with biplane, C-arm angiographic equipment. Interventional techniques include blade and balloon atrial septostomy, balloon angioplasty, coiling of PDAs, stenting of pulmonary arteries and coarctations, balloon valvuloplasty, and device closure of septal defects. Over 300 pediatric procedures are performed annually in addition to the 50-100 pediatric EP studies that are performed each year.
EP Program
The pediatric electrophysiology program performs all aspects of pediatric arrhythmia management including invasive and noninvasive EP studies and ablations utilizing state of the art equipment, pacemaker and defibrillator implantation and follow-up, laser lead extraction, cardiac resynchronization therapy, tilt tests, and ambulatory monitoring.
Cardiovascular Surgery
Approximately 200-250 cardiovascular procedures are performed each year. All types of surgical therapies are offered, with close collaboration between surgical and cardiac teams.
