Training Schedule & Expectations

Training Tracks

Option A:  Clinical Investigation Training

Year 1 12 months clinical
Year 2 9 months graduate school, 3 months clinical
Year 3 9 months graduate school, 3 months clinical
Year 4 12 months clinical

Option B:  Basic Science Investigation Training

Year 1 12 months clinical
Year 2 12 months research
Year 3 12 months research
Year 4 12 months clinical

Vacation time is scheduled in accordance with RRC guidelines.

Clinical Training

The focus in clinical training is a "hands-on" approach with 1:1 interaction with the faculty. Fellows spend time in the catheterization laboratory, clinic, and wards, along with months focused in the noninvasive lab and the EP service. The specific structure of the program is very flexible and individual programs are tailored jointly with the program director.

Documentation of Procedures

Procedures Training Minimum
Cardiac Catheterizations 100 (20 interventional, at least 5 balloon septostomies)
Echocardiograms 300
Pediatric Electrophysiology (EP) 10 (20 pacemaker interrogations, 4 cardioversions, understand and program temporary postop pacemakers)

Call averages every 4th night home call and every 4th weekend. Duty hour regulations are strictly followed.

Other training provided includes BLS/PALS and Radiation Safety Training.

Conferences

Clinical fellows are expected to attend the following educational conferences:

  • Continuity Cardiology Clinic, ½ day per week for 4 years
  • Pediatric Grand Rounds
  • Pediatric Cardiology Teaching conference
  • Surgery Conference
  • Echocardiography Conference
  • Catheterization Conference
  • Morbidity and Mortality Conference
