The Division of Pediatric Cardiology at the University of Virginia is proud of our commitment to excellence in patient care, education, research, and community outreach. Our Fellowship Program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and successful completion qualifies the trainee to take the Pediatric Cardiology Sub-board examination for certification by the American Board of Pediatrics.
Overview
The UVA Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship offers a combined program of clinical and research training designed to graduate academic pediatric cardiologists. Trainees acquire the clinical and technical skills necessary to function independently as pediatric cardiologists and learn the general principles and techniques of scientific investigation and the reporting of investigation results.
Four years of training are required. We seek to match applicants who will commit to four years in combined clinical and research training, and who intend to pursue an academic career in pediatric cardiology and clinical investigation. Academic training and graduate studies are supported through a training grant from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.
Applicant Qualifications and Licensure
Fellows are selected from applicants who will have completed training in pediatrics at the time fellowship would begin. A Virginia license to practice medicine is not required as UVA grants fellows an institutional training permit. The University of Virginia does not discriminate with regard to race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin or political affiliation. Candidates must be U.S. citizens or permanent U.S. residents. The stipend for fellows is set annually by the UVA Health System.
Program Structure
Year 1
- Devoted primarily to acquiring clinical skills in pediatric cardiology while focusing on the six core competencies required by the ACGME
- Training includes physical examination, interpretation of electrocardiograms, chest roentgenograms, and echocardiograms
- Proficiency is gained in the performance of transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography, cardiac catheterization, angiography, electrophysiology, and management of patients in the intensive care unit
Years 2-3
- Provides in-depth training in cardiovascular research
- May focus on the basic or clinical sciences
Year 4
- Completes the clinical training and provides an opportunity to focus on an area of clinical subspecialty interest such as MRI or echocardiography
