Newborn Nursery

Newborns delivered at the University of Virginia are cared for in the Newborn Nursery.  The nursery is located on the 8th floor of the University Hospital, adjacent to Labor and Delivery. The nursery is staffed by general pediatricians as well as neonatologists (doctors who have specialized training in the care of newborns).  We offer support in breast feeding as well as providing education in the care of the newborn and, if desired, classes in infant CPR.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

NICU 2006

Infants who are born prematurely or have other potentially life-threatening conditions are cared for in the NICU.  Here they are treated by doctors and nurses who have received specialized training in the care of premature infants.  A hospital-based neonatal transport system uses both ground and air vehicles to transport sick babies from 30 surrounding community hospitals. The NICU offers state-of-the-art neonatology, including ECMO, high frequency oscillation, and a full spectrum of cardiac surgery, including heart transplant.  Inpatient Wards

With a combined capacity of 37 beds, over 2700 children ages 0-21 receive general and specialty pediatric/surgical care on the CMC wards each year.  An interdisciplinary team of health care professionals including nursers, social workers, physical/occupational therapists, respiratory therapists, pharmacists and nutritionists provide family-centered care to children and families from Virginia, surrounding states, the nation and the world.

 Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)

 PICU Children who require more critical conditions are cared for in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).  The PICU has a 10 bed capacity and cares for children from infancy through adolescence.  The PICU is staffed by pediatricians who have completed specialized training in the care of critically ill children. This high acuity, mixed medical and surgical intensive care unit receives approximately 700-800 admissions per year, about 60% medical and 40% surgical.
