FULL-TIME TRAINING PROGRAM IN NEUROPATHOLOGY
Drs. Hussaini, Lopes & Mandell
The overall goal of the Neuropathology Program is to provide a flexible, full-time educational program in both diagnostic and experimental neuropathology. The Program encompasses the varied aspects of modern neuropathology, with an emphasis on academic neuropathology. The educational philosophy has three specific goals.
The first goal is to impart the requisite skills for the histopathologic and ultrastructural assessment of the nervous and neuromuscular systems. This training in morphologic analysis encompasses the application of special histochemical and immunohistochemical techniques with emphasis on effectively integrating neuropathologic findings with both clinical and lab data (including neuro-imaging studies). The application of diagnostic molecular biology to complement morphologic techniques, especially in the study of neoplasia and degenerative diseases, is an important component of the educational program.
The second goal is to foster the development of effective communication skills in both oral presentation and scientific writing.
The third goal is to provide a suitable foundation of basic neuroscience and technical expertise that would enable the trainee to interpret new developments in the basic neurosciences as they relate to neurologic disease.
These three goals of this accredited Program also encompass the requisite postgraduate training to qualify for the American Board of Pathology Certification in Neuropathology. The training program is normally configured in a two year format, but a three year program is provided for trainees who especially desire additional training in advanced diagnostic and/or research techniques. The flexibility of the two or three year format depends on the previous experience and professional goals of each trainee. The two year program is designed to be complete so that the trainee obtains the correct balance of diagnostic and technical/research skills that are supplemented with investigative activities in either the applied clinical or basic neurosciences. It is the intent and expectation of the program that all trainees will successfully pursue American Board of Pathology certification examination in Neuropathology.
Program Structure
The program is tailored so that there is a gradual increase of responsibility on the part of the trainees. The trainees are closely supervised by the faculty who provide 24-hour coverage. The neuropathology faculty and trainees are assigned for the autopsy and neurosurgical pathology services on a monthly schedule with an admixture of responsibilities on both the autopsy and surgical neuropathological services.
