toxicology

Training in the Toxicology Laboratory occurs during the first two weeks of the Chemistry rotation and includes identification of the cause of acute, chemical induced illness, drugs of abuse testing, athletic drug testing and routine therapeutic drug monitoring. While the total number and types of tests performed in the laboratory is not large, testing is available only during limited hours unless approval for technologist call-back is granted by the trainee. During the rotation, the trainee will:

  1. Develop familiarity with basic pharmacokinetics and procedures used for therapeutic drug monitoring
  2. Experience and be familiar with the procedures and equipment used for toxicology testing
  3. Act as a liaison to the Emergency Department, Blue Ridge Poison Center, and perform clinical follow-up on all STAT requests from that area.
