RESEARCH TRAINING

jordanThe Department encompasses a broad spectrum of established clinical and basic research programs in clinical and basic science research. These programs integrate into the practice of Pathology, and residents are strongly encouraged to participate under the guidance of appropriate faculty members. Many faculty members have joint appointments in basic science departments including Anatomy and Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Physiology and the Neurosciences. In addition, the Pathology Department participates in many interdisciplinary research training programs including the Medical Scientist Training Program, the Cell and Molecular Biology Program, and the Biophysics Program, the Beirne B. Carter Center for Immunology Research, the Reproductive Endocrinology Program, the Biotechnology Training Program, and the Center for Research in Reproduction. This participation provides laboratory environments in which residents may work side by side with graduate students and post doctoral fellows.

Residents who are interested in research opportunities will find ample faculty assistance in planning a program which best suits his/her personal career goals. All research experiences are planned so as not to sacrifice clinical training. Therefore, the time spent in Experimental Pathology may be applied towards Pathology Board eligibility. The Department encourages residents to attend national meetings where each individual may have an opportunity to present work conducted in the Department. In addition, the Department has an active publication record which includes many manuscripts authored by residents. Many residents in this Department choose future careers in Academic Pathology. For these individuals, a more well defined program combining research and residency is frequently useful.
