CLINICAL ELECTIVES IN PATHOLOGY

The Department offers a number of electives which combine speciality training coupled with clinical experience.

Laboratory Management in Surgical Pathology
The elective focuses on quality control and quality assurance activities in the immunohistology laboratory, histology laboratory, and cytopathology.  This provides access to cases of special interest as well as cases requiring modified diagnoses during QA assessment.

Cytopathology
The elective The elective focuses on quality control and quality assurance activities in the immunohistology laboratory, histology laboratory, and cytopathology.  This provides access to cases of special interest as well as cases requiring modified diagnoses during QA assessment.

Dermatopathology/Dermatology
The structure of the elective is flexible and may include "hands-on" exposure to dermatology patients, study of selected topics through journal articles and microscopic slides, extensive teaching slide reviews based on archival material, sign-out and teaching responsibilities, preparation of an original manuscript, or a combination of these activities.

Clinical Research
The two or three block (taken consecutively) elective is devoted to the organization and completion of a clinicopathologic project in conjunction with one or more attendings.  The expected endpoint is a publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

Molecular Diagnostic Surgical Pathology
Focuses on the application of molecular biology techniques to diagnostic surgical pathology. In situ hybridization/immunohistochemistry is a major focus that facilitates experimentation in examining specific clinicopathologic questions. The length of the elective is flexible.

Private Practice
Introduces the resident to the daily operations of a private practice, and its interactions with hospitals and other practices to understand the methods of working.

Renal Pathology
A one block (4 week) elective with a strong emphasis on self-motivated study.  This is a fellow-level elective with a low number of new cases daily, (a roughly equal mix of native and transplant biopsies), giving trainees the opportunity for background reading and pulling sets of cases to review.  The diagnoses on all renal biopsies since 2001 are available in tabulated form, many of which have immunofluorescent images available online, and all ultrastructural images are available both in hard copy and online.

Diagnostic Hematopathology
This elective focuses on improving diagnostic skills in laboratory hematology for senior resident physicians. The resident physician participates with the      attending physician and staff at daily rounds, conferences and in the consultative and diagnostic activities of the Laboratory Hematology service.  The senior resident physician is expected to take a lead role in the interpretation of peripheral blood smears, body fluids, bone marrow aspirates, etc. in the Hematology Laboratory. The program is flexible so that the special interests of the resident physician, i.e., flow cytometry or coagulation can be addressed. Limited research projects can be arranged on an individual basis depending on the length of the elective.
