MICROBIOLOGY

Core Rotation: Three months in the first year of clinical pathology.
The training in Microbiology consists of a two-month full-time rotation in the various sections of the Microbiology Laboratory: general and special Bacteriology including accessioning and processing, Anaerobic Bacteriology, Mycobacteriology, Mycology, and Virology. The residents will work on the bench and use textbooks and manuals to acquire the knowledge outlined in the rotation schedule. In addition, the resident will be involved in evaluation of new tests and in quality assurance activities.
The resident will participate in the daily laboratory rounds with the Directors and the supervisory technologist and will be responsible for clinical liaison. The resident is expected to present and discuss clinical information at rounds and to conduct at least one case presentation per week during rounds.
Attendance at a weekly Infectious Diseases Case Presentation Conference will be an integral part of the training. In order to become acquainted with management problems, the resident will participate in the weekly administrative meeting of the Division of Microbiology and discuss management problems with the Director.
During a second elective rotation residents may spend additional time in one or several of the sections and/or work on a developmental or research project. He/she may substitute for one of the Directors. Residents are encouraged to develop projects that may lead to contributions in the science of clinical microbiology.
