MEDICAL INFORMATICS
Dr. Boyd Since medical information dispensed by computer systems is the principal commodity produced by pathologists, medical informatics is emphasized and integrated throughout the pathology residency. The Department of Pathology operates state-of-the-art information systems in the clinical laboratories (Sunquest) and the anatomic pathology laboratories (CoPath/Dynamic). Digital imaging facilities are available in several locations in the Department and Medical Center for acquisition and presentation of pathology gross and microscopic images. Residents are trained in the use of these systems during their respective rotations in anatomic and clinical pathology. Courses in electronic mail, MEDLINE searching, and internet communications using telnet, FTP, newsgroups, discussion groups, Gopher, and the World Wide Web are offered regularly by the University allowing residents to acquire skills in the use of these important resources. Courses in the operation of word processing, spreadsheet, and slide preparation programs are available to individual residents as needed. Statistical analysis techniques are taught in individual sessions with the Laboratory Systems Engineering Director. Computer workstation laboratories have been set aside in the Department of Pathology to provide both PC and Macintosh capabilities to all residents for accessing local and wide-area networks. Remote modem access to the laboratory information systems, campus-wide information resources and the internet is available without charge to those residents who have their own computers at home. Advanced training in medical informatics is available for interested residents and can be arranged with the Laboratory Systems Engineering Director on an elective basis. |
