CYTOGENETICS AND MOLECULAR PATHOLOGY
Drs. Golden, Haverstick, Mahadevan & Silverman
The resident will spend two months during second year of clinical pathology (or third year of anatomic training for straight AP or AP/NP residents) in the disciplines of cytogenetics and molecular pathology. The resident will have required readings, participate in various interdepartment conferences, present continuing education sessions, provide clinical correlations, and sign out cases in both laboratories. The role of laboratory genetics and the pathologist as part of an interdisciplinary team in the evaluation of genetic, perinatal and neoplastic disease will be stressed throughout the rotation.
Core training will include general genetics principles, laboratory quality assurance measures, specimen collection and preparation, karyotyping and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) procedures. Specific molecular assays include those for antigen receptor gene rearrangement, muscular dystrophy, Factor V Leiden, and fragile X syndrome. Infectious disease testing includes assays for HIV, Hepatitis C virus and pertussis. Relevant principles of Southern blot analysis and the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) will be emphasized.
Advanced training or additional experience in selected topics, including involvement in developmental and research projects within these laboratories, is encouraged and can be arranged with the Directors.
