Residency Training in Pathology

Program Overview -

Pathology residency programs are offered in the following areas:

  • Four year program combined Anatomic/ Clinical track 
  • Three year program; straight Anatomic track
  • Three year program; straight Clinical track
  • Pathology-Neuropathology, four year program (Anatomic pathology followed by Neuropathology fellowship)
  • In addition, the Department of Pathology has a program combining residency training with basic research, specifically designed for M.D./Ph.D., applicants and others interested in preparing for an academic career in experimental pathology.
  • One-year fellowships in Surgical Pathology/Cytopathology (combined), Dermatopathology, Gynecological Pathology, Hematopathology, and Transfusion Medicine, a two-year Neuropathology fellowship, and a three year Laboratory Medicine fellowship are also offered.

In the combined AP/ CP program, residents are assigned to either anatomic or clinical pathology for one-year blocks. The first 3.5 years of Anatomic Pathology and Clinical Pathology consists of a core training program that adheres to the guidelines of the American Board of Pathology and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education . The remainder of the training period is spent in elective rotations of the residents' chosing.  Trainees in the straight AP or CP programs will have the same basic training in Anatomic or Clinical Pathology as the AP/ CP residents, but will spend one to two years in basic or clinical research and have additional in-depth training in one or more relevant specialty areas.
