IMMUNOLOGY

Dr. Lawrence Silverman, Ph.D.

Core Rotation: One month in the first year of clinical pathology.

The resident observes and learns the methodology and interpretation of the immunological procedures currently being utilized in the laboratory. These include the quantitative and qualitative analysis of serum, urine and cerebrospinal fluid for immunoglobulins and other normal and abnormal constituents; serology and immunoassays; the immunofluorescent detection of certain autoreactive antibodies.

A major portion of the rotation is spent in the study of lymphocyte phenotype analysis using monoclonal antibodies and flow cytometry. There is a close working relationship between the Clinical Immunology and Clinical Hematology Laboratories for workup and interpretation of immunological disorders.
