Combined Research Training Program in Experimental Pathology and Residency Training in AP, CP, or AP/CP
Selection ProcessTypical candidates for this program will hold the M.D. degree and have a background in laboratory research, either as part of an organized M.D.-Ph.D. program or through research experience outside of Medical School. The program will be quite selective. Applications will be selected through the normal Residency application process, but applicants should clearly indicate their interest in the Research Residency Program.
Advantages of a Research ResidencyThis Program compares favorably to other career tracks for academically-oriented clinicians, where separate research and clinical training may prolong the period before the individual is eligible for appointment as an independent academic investigator. The Program aims to enhance the quality and variety of academic investigators who are drawn to Pathology as a means of maximizing their impact on academic medicine. Training periods for Anatomic or Clinical Pathology are anticipated as 5 years and for Anatomic and Clinical Pathology as 6 years, with at least two years dedicated towards full time research. Schedule of trainingSelected candidates will participate in the full activities of the Pathology Residency program, and will be granted two years of research training funded through the Department, or through national training grants or through the individual training investigators. Continuing training or faculty positions are anticipated for outstanding trainees. The program will be quite flexible, and will maximize the training opportunities for the research resident. Training may encompass Anatomic Pathology, Clinical Pathology, or both. Integration of training schedules with research will be individualized, but most commonly the Research Resident will begin training as part of Anatomic Pathology and will establish a tentative program for the subsequent training years with the assistance of a Departmental advisor by the end of the first year. Research may be conducted within the Pathology Department or within another University Department by prior approval. The trainee will participate in the research community of the Department and University while receiving his clinical training. Research training may begin in year three, and may partly integrate with training in Clinical Pathology. Alternatively, training in Clinical Pathology may precede research training.
