cyto3CYTOPATHOLOGY

Ms. Covell (Laboratory Supervisor), Drs. Atkins, Cathro, Frierson, Stelow & Stoler

The Cytopathology laboratory processes approximately 30,000 cases annually including 1,100 fine needle aspiration specimens. The rate for abnormal cervical Pap smears is consistently high (about 20%). There is a three month rotation during the second year of Anatomic Pathology. The resident studies and reviews all abnormal cytologic preparations under the supervision of the cytopathology fellows, and/or a senior cytopathologist. Additional experience is gained through examination of extensive study material that includes glass slides, projected slides, and video discs. A large number of fine needle aspirations are performed in the hospital, operating room, radiology suites and clinics. Many of these are carried out by the cytopathologist and resident assigned to cytopathology. The resident also attends a cytopathology oriented conference. Additional experience in cytopathology is readily available during elective periods.
