AUTOPSY PATHOLOGY
Drs. Lopes (director), Mandell, Templeton, Tillack, & Wick; J. Brian Turner P.A.
The Department of Pathology performs approximately 200 autopsies each year. Two or three residents are assigned to the Autopsy Service at any one time. During Year 1 of Anatomic Pathology, the residents are assigned to the Autopsy Service for five months. During the second rotation of Anatomic Pathology training (Year 3), the residents supervise first year residents and medical students doing autopsy electives and perform their own autopsies with limited supervision. Over a two year period a resident should expect to do approximately 75 autopsies, including cases seen during the forensic pathology rotation.
For first year residents, autopsies are performed under the supervision of members of the senior staff. Following dissection, the case is checked with a member of the senior staff or senior resident who reviews the gross organs and assists in the preparation of a provisional anatomic diagnosis (PAD) list. After histologic sections have been reviewed by the residents, the case is completed in consultation with the responsible member of the attending staff.
Most cases are presented and discussed at the weekly autopsy conference attended by all Anatomic Pathology residents. Several interdepartmental autopsy pathology conferences are held throughout the Medical Center. The residents performing the autopsies will present them during these conferences, with the preparatory assistance of the attending pathologist. Selected cases are also presented at a monthly CPC.
