Residency Application Requirements
The University of Virginia Health System is a participating member of the National Resident Matching Program. All applicants for Pathology residency appointments must register with the NRMP to participate in the Match. International Medical Graduates should register either via their school (if applicable) or via the Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). All applications to our program must be submitted via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). The Program does not accept hard copy applications via regular mail, fax nor electronic copies via email.
The deadline for accepting applications is December 1st.
Applications to the program must include -
- Completed Application Form (CAF)
- Medical School Performance Evaluation report (MSPE) as soon as it is available; usually on or about November 1st
- USMLE scores for Step I of 85% or above (raw score 210). M4s should have sat or scheduled Step II, CS and CK by the time of interview
- Medical School Transcript
- Three Letters of Recommendation (at least one from Pathology)
- Personal Statement
Additional Requirements for International Medical Graduates -
- Must be ECFMG certified at the time of application
- USMLE scores for Step I, II (CK) of 85% or above (raw score 210), and a Pass on Step II CS. These are required to be eligible for ECFMG certifcation
- EFL score of 275 or a first time pass on USMLE Step II, Clinical Skills as proof of language proficiency
- Graduation from medical school within the past five (5) years
- Only J1 visa is supported
Interview Process -
Each application is reviewed by the Residency Committee prior to extending an invitation to interview. A formal interview is required to be considered for the program. In order for your application to be reviewed by the committee we require, at minimum:
- CAF
- USMLE scores
- Medical school transcript
- Minimum of two letters (third is required by the time of interview)
- Personal statement
- IMGs, in addition to the aforementioned must be ECFMG certified (as stated above)
The committee will not review incomplete applications.
Upon review of complete applications the program will notify the applicant by email of their decision. Please be sure when completing your CAF that your email account is active.
Interviews begin on November 1st and end by January 31st for positions starting on or about July 1st.
