Congratulation to Dr. Paul Mintz, who was among the initial inductees elected to the National Blood Foundation Hall of Fame. The twelve individuals chosen are among the 140 previous recipients of grants made by this research funding foundation. Those honored were selected for research accomplishments and leadership in the field of transfusion medicine.
Congratulations to Dr. David Bruns and to Dr. Donald Hunt, who received two major awards given annually by the Academy of Clinical Laboratory Physicians and Scientists. Dr. Bruns received the Gerald T. Evans Award. This award is presented annually to a member of ACLPS for outstanding leadership and/or service to the society. Dr. Hunt was awarded the Cotlove Lectureship, presented annually to a scientist for outstanding contributions to the science of laboratory medicine.
Congratulations to Dr. David Bruns and Dr. Leann Mikesh! A $100,000 grant was awarded to Professor David Bruns on behalf of Post-Doctoral Fellow, Dr. Leann Mikesh. Dr. Mikesh is in the Pathology Department's accredited post-doctoral training program in Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine. Dr. Mikesh is the second recipient of the competitive Past-Presidents' Scholarship, given annually by the Van Slyke Foundation.
Congratulations to Dr. Mahadevan! Muscular Dystrophy Canada (MDC), the Canadian Institutes of Health Research – Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis (CIHR-IMHA) and the Rachel Fund have just announced that, "Dr. Mani S. Mahadevan has received the first research award granted by the Fund. Dr. Mahadevan and his team will receive $239,756 over the next two years to further their exciting and innovative work on myotonic dystrophy (DM), also known as Steinert’s disease."
Dr. Tim Bullock is pleased to announce two new lab members. Stefani Mancuso has joined his lab as a Lab Specialist, and Rohan Rajapakse as a post-doctoral fellow. Welcome!

Congratulations to Dr. David Bruns! In July he received the 2007 Scientist of the Year Award from the National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry.
New Departmental Publications:
The new book, Fundamentals of Molecular Diagnostics, by Bruns, Ashwood and Burtis, will be published by Saunders/Elsevier in May.
The sixth edition of Fundamentals of Clinical Chemistry, by Burtis, Ashwood and Bruns, will be published in November.
