hazenimage Title: Professor of Pathology and Microbiology, Director of  Clinical Microbiology
 Contact: Kevin C. Hazen, Ph.D., D(ABMM) (khazen@virginia.edu)

Laboratory Interests:   Biochemistry and pathobiology of virulence-associated glycoproteins in fungal pathogenesis

Research Projects:
1.  Comparative proteomics of cell wall proteins involved in fungal pathogenesis

2.  Expression and regulation of genes involved in Candida albicans N-mannosylation

3.  Identification and disruption of genes involved in regulation and expression of cell surface hydrophobicity

4.  Comparative expression of genes and structural analysis of proteins involved in adhesion events associated with vascular infection, mucosal disease, and biofilm development

5.  Analysis of innate immune signaling events in response to different cell wall virulence phenotypes

What you will learn on this rotation:
1.  Contemporary and cutting-edge techniques in Candida albicans molecular biology

2.  State-of-the-art techniques of protein sequence analysis, glycoprotein structure determination, and carbohydrate profiling

3.  Recent advances and developments in understanding the interaction of fungi with immunocompromised patients and the challenges of going from “bench-to-bedside.”

4.  The opportunity to interact with carbohydrate structural and synthetic chemists, fungal molecular biologists, infectious disease specialists, and protein structure biochemists
