Volunteerism
The United Way Laurence E. Richardson Day of Caring was established in 1992 to promote the spirit and value of volunteerism, increase the awareness of local human services agencies and schools and demonstrate what people working together for the community can accomplish. Each year, UVA Health System teams participate through projects ranging from painting an elementary school to landscaping a local housing community.
Last year's day of caring took place on Wednesday September 19, 2007. 500 UVA Health System employees participated in the event; nearly a 20 percent increase over last year's participation. Volunteers' efforts made a noticeable impact on the Charlottesville community and beyond. "It's just awesome," said Pam Leake about the 2007 Laurence E. Richardson Day of Caring. "It's a great way to give back to the community and bond with team members outside the office. We get to spread some cheer."
After completing an outdoor beautification project at Monticello High School, Stacy Crowell, echoed Leake's sentiment. "This is the highlight of my year," she said, "I would do it twice a year if I could."
