Community Health Fairs
The Office of Community Relations, Outreach and Service supports a variety of community health fairs and free medical screenings.
In 2008, the Office of Community Relations will participate in the following events. If you would like to have the UVA Health System represented at your event, please contact Maria Synan (mvsynan@virginia.edu)
- June 19 - Orange County Boys/Girls Club
- July 10 - Nelson County Health Fair
- July 12 - Charlottesville/Albemarle Boys/Girls Club Health Fair
- August 2 - Westhaven Community Days
2007 Health Fairs
The Boys and Girls Club Health and Fitness Fair occurred on Saturday, July 14, 2007. Approximately 300 community members attended. Services included growth screenings, blood pressure screenings, scoliosis screenings, sports physicals, Medicaid support, family advocacy programs, first aid education, poison safety, teen health, children's dental education, and vision screenings.
The Nelson County Health Fair took place on Thursday July 12, 2007. Services included skin cancer screenings, diabetes education, safety and wellness, poison prevention, legs for life, peripheral artery screening, and health education. Approximately 350 community members participated.
The Westhaven Community Days is a community-wide fair that was held on August 4, 2007. Over 50 community organizations were represented. Fair attendees made their own first aids kits with materials provided by the UVA Health System.
The Buckingham Health Fair took place on September 15, 2007. The UVA Health System Community Relations, Outreach, and Service office collaborated with the UVA office of Diversity and Equity and Third Liberty Baptist Church to plan the event. Services included free health screenings (mammography, HIV testing, sports physicals) as well as health assessments (blood pressure, diabetes, height/weight, BMI). Approximately 500 community members joined the festivities.
The second annual WVPT Book Fair took place on September 15, 2007. The Fair strives to encourage early literacy and a love for books in children in the Albemarle community. Children who stopped by the Community Relations, Outreach, and Service booth colored their own bookmarks and answered questions about bicycle safety to win prizes.
