Volunteer Week 2007

In 2007 the Office of Community Outreach was proud to participate in National Volunteer Week, a celebration of volunteerism that took place April 16-20, 2007.  Each day, staff had the opportunity to donate items to local charities, participate in a volunteer activity and check out our new volunteer website, http://www.volunteeruvahealth.org/

Nearly 200 staff members volunteered at least an hour of their time during Volunteer Week.  Additionally 107 staff members are currently signed up for the volunteer website where they will receive updates about future volunteer opportunities.

In light of the Virginia Tech tragedy on Monday April 16th, Thursday's volunteers made maroon and orange ribbons.  These ribbons were distributed to health system employees who wished to show their solidarity with the Virginia Tech community.  Additionally, participating volunteers wrote letters expressing their sympathy and support.  These letters were sent to Blacksburg and distributed to the family and friends of victims.

Participants also donated ink cartridges to donate to the Cartridges for Kids program, a program which provides funds for recyclable items such as ink cartridges.  This effort will help to support the UVa Health System's signature community outreach programs.

Friday, April 20: Wahoo West Café, 11:00 am -1:00 pm

Across the nation on April 20th, people wore maroon and orange to show their support for Virginia Tech.  On Friday, volunteers continued to assemble and distribute maroon and orange ribbons in the Wahoo West Café, contributing to the national support effort.  It is estimated that in total 3,000 ribbons were distributed between Thursday and Friday.

Additionally, participants collected and sorted old cell phones for the Shelter for Help in Emergency.  These cell phones are cleared and distributed to women at the shelter for use as emergency phones.
