Second Wind Head & Neck Cancer Support Group

The Head & Neck Cancer Support Group meetings are held the last Thursday of the month from 12:00pm to 1:30pm in the Riggs Auditorium on the second floor of the West Complex. Head and Neck cancer patients as well as family members, friends and caregivers are welcome to attend. A light lunch is served. Yul Brynner Head & Neck Cancer Awareness Week
April 2008

Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week is sponsored by the Yul Brynner Head and Neck Foundation, Inc., a not-for-profit organization founded in 1983 by the late Yul Brynner and Dr. George Sisson, the surgeon who was Brynner's doctor. The goal is to spread education, awareness, and support of this "neglected cancer." The event has been endorsed by the American Head and Neck Society, the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and the Society for Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Nurses. An annual event that will include free head & neck cancer screenings and other activities to increase awareness of this disease which affects five percent of the population.

Additional information about FREE Head & Neck Cancer screenings for patients that meet at least one of the following criteria will be posted in early 2008:

  • Use tobacco products and/or consume alcohol;
  • Have a persistent sore throat or pain when swallowing;
  • Have a lump in the neck;
  • Have persistent hoarseness;
  • Have mouth sores that bleed or do not heal;
  • Have persistent ear pain, or
  • Have a family history of head and neck cancer.

Guest speakers include Gregory T. Wolf, M.D., Gerald S. Berke, M.D., Robert M. Kellman, M.D., and William W. Shockley, MD.  Additional regional and local experts will present.  Course participants are invited to submit challenging or interesting cases for discussion.

Receive CME for Attending Departmental Teaching Conferences

The departmental teaching conferences held Wednesday mornings, 7am-8am and 8am-9am, and Thursday afternoon, 5pm-6pm, are now eligible for CME credit, category 1. To obtain credit for these activities, simply attend and fill out an evaluation form. This is a great means of maintaining one’s knowledge base in otolaryngology, and receiving CME credit, too.
