Medication Policy
Please continue asking your primary care doctor to prescribe your pain medications. We are happy to keep in touch with your primary care doctor about your treatment and recovery or make pain management clinic referrals if necessary.
We may prescribe pain medication for the initial recovery period if you have surgery with us. Please call us if you have continued pain beyond what the prescription covers so that we can discuss with you the best next steps. When asking for a prescription refill for post-op medication we have prescribed for you, please allow 2 business days for us to respond to your request.
We are unable to provide pain prescriptions after regular clinic hours.
For Your First Appointment
To help us provide the best care for you, please help us understand your condition and determine how we can best care for you. Please bring the following with you to your first appointment:
1. If you have images (such as X-rays, MRIs, nuclear medicine scans and CT scans) of the area needing treatment, we would like to see the actual pictures. If the images were done at a facility other than the University of Virginia Medical Center, you will need to obtain them in advance of your appointment from the hospital or facility where they were taken. Your primary care doctor may send us copies of reports about the imaging, but we would like to see the actual images. If possible, please bring them on a CD.
2. If you have had previous orthopaedic surgery somewhere other than the University of Virginia Medical Center, please get copies of the operative notes from the surgeon, hospital or outpatient facility that performed the surgery. If you had an arthroscopy, please try to obtain copies of the pictures taken during the surgery.
3. Please also bring a complete list of your current medications.
Thank you for choosing UVA Orthopaedic Surgery for your healthcare needs!
