The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Virginia welcomes and encourages applicants to rotate at UVA. It is an excellent opportunity for applicants to come and experience our program. It is also an excellent opportunity for the faculty and residents to get to know the applicant. One of the biggest strengths of our program in the relationships between the residents and the faculty.
The visiting rotation is typically one month in duration but can be arranged on an individual basis. The visiting medical student can rotatate on one or two services (Joints, Sports, Upper Extremity, Foot and Ankle, Trauma, Spine). Applicants may request their preferences but will it will depend on availability.
While on service the visiting medical student will become a critical member of the team. It is expected that the student help the team round in the morning, follow all patients on their specific service, participate in clinic, the emergency room and the operating room, attend conferences and journal club. In addition it is strongly encouraged that medical students take overnight call with the in-house resident.

This is an excellent opportunity for both the visiting medical student and the Orthopaedic department to get to know eachother. It is essentially a one-month interview. We recomend that if you come to UVA work as hard as you can, get to know as many residents and faculty, and enjoy Charlottesville.
