Commonly asked questions after knee replacement

Can a family member stay with me in the hospital? Only if you have a private room.

What time will my surgery be? You will be notified of the time the day before surgery by the operating room. They will tell you the time to report to the hospital for your surgery. The orthopaedic staff has no control over this.

How long will I be in the hospital? 3 days.

How long is the surgery? Approximately 2 ½ hours.

When will I get out of bed? You will get out of bed the day after surgery.

What time do I need to leave the hospital? We strive to have patients discharged by 11:00 a.m. on day of discharge.

How long is the incision? 8 - 10 inches, down the center of the knee.

What is the prosthesis made of? Metal and plastic.

Will it set off alarms? Yes, if more than one joint. Especially in the areas where the technology is more sensitive (i.e. larger airports.)

How long do I have to wear the knee immobilizer? This is usually evaluated on an individual case. Your physician will tell you when to stop wearing it, based on your surgical results.

When can I drive? We request that you not drive for 6 weeks. If you have an automatic, and the surgery has been on your left knee, please discuss with your doctor at your 2-week follow-up appointment.

When can I shower? 24 hours after the staples have been removed. Staples are usually removed 10 days from the day of surgery.

May I use ice packs to help decrease pain and swelling? Yes, ice is very useful in helping to relieve these symptoms. It may be used immediately after surgery and until your pain and swelling decrease. (DO NOT get the wound or dressing wet; use a water tight ice pack.)
