Resident Participation in
Clinical or Laboratory Research

This program provides an unusual opportunity for clinical and laboratory research. It is one of the few programs which is a six year program requiring a minimum of six months of dedicated research fellowship, residents have six months for research during which time they have no clinical responsibilities. This time is devoted to the study and conduct of research investigations. In addition to attending seminars and colloquia that are held regularly in the basic science departments, the residents are encouraged to take formal courses in the biological sciences through the University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and at the Medical School. Attendance and presentation at research lab meetings, which consist of research presentations, is mandatory, as is attendance at all departmental conferences.

Additionally, each resident is allocated two ten week blocks of research time during their four years of Orthopaedic training. Research time is allocated to residents based on the submission of a research proposal which is evaluated by members of the faculty in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. The allocation of research time is based on the quality of the proposal. Research is conducted under the preceptorship of a member of the faculty in the department. During each of these periods, the residents are free of clinical responsibilities except for emergency room call once each fifth evening.
