The UVA Interview Process

The University of Virginia’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program participates in the National Residency Match Program (www.nrmp.org), and takes applications for residency exclusively through ERAS (http://www.aamc.org/audienceeras.htm) each fall. Applicants interested in applying for residency, whether current medical students, international medical graduates, or previously unmatched applicants should apply directly through ERAS.

To be considered, an applicant must have completed their ERAS application process, including photograph, minimum of 3 letters of recommendation, USMLE Step 1, personal statement, CV, transcript, MSPE (former Dean’s Letter), and requested Supplemental Application. The deadline for completed file submission is November 1, 2009. No application materials will be considered after this date; no incomplete application will be considered.

Application review is done by committee at the University of Virginia, and decisions made to offer out interviews are anticipated to be complete before Thanksgiving week. Interview dates are December 12, 2009, December 19, 2009, and January 9, 2010. There are limited interview spaces available, and they will fill on a first-come, first-served basis once invitations have gone out. Applicants will be notified of the dispensation of their file either way by December 1st.

There is limited availability for a second look should the applicant wish to come back after interviews have completed. Interested applicants should notify Mrs. Franke as soon as possible post-interview to arrange.

The Match

The residency program at the University of Virginia consists of two distinct programs: the 5-year categorical, and the 6-year academic or research track. Each has their own match number and applicants who wish to be considered for both should so indicate by listing both.

Post-Match

Successfully matched applicants should contact Mrs. Franke at 434 243-0265 as soon as they can to start gathering paperwork for hospital credentialing. Orientation dates for the University and Medical Center are generally mid-June, with Orthopaedic Surgery orientation commencing the following week. All in-coming residents must have completed all required documentation before they will be allowed to start their internship.

The Student Externship Program

The University of Virginia’s Orthopaedic Surgery Externship Program is available each summer and fall for qualified 4th year medical students from LCME medical schools. Interested applicants should submit an application through the Student Affairs Office in the spring (usually May for July-Sep rotations, and August for Oct-Dec rotations). The program will take the student on THEIR SCHOOL’S rotation dates. The University has transitioned in 2009 to utilizing the AAMC’s VSAS forms. Please see the Student Affairs website for instructions on applying utilizing VSAS http://www.med-ed.virginia.edu/handbook/electives/visiting/.

In addition to a fully completed and verified VSAS application, the interested student should send their USMLE Step 1 scoresheet and a single letter of recommendation directly to:
Mindy Franke, C-TAGME
UVA Orthopaedic Surgery
PO Box 800159
Charlottesville, VA 22908
Mcf3f@virginia.edu
Fax (434) 243-0242

Once a completed application has been received, a student’s application packet is reviewed by our Student Selection Committee which consists of both faculty and residents. Students approved by the Committee are offered externship rotations and are given the opportunity to rotate for four weeks on 2 available subspecialty services. Subspecialty services that may be offered include:
•    Adult Reconstruction (Joints)
•    Foot & Ankle Surgery
•    Spine Surgery
•    Pediatric Orthopaedics
•    Orthopaedic Trauma
•    Orthopaedic Sports Medicine
•    Hand & Upper Extremity Surgery

Student Evaluations & Letters of Recommendation

Student rotators are evaluated each 2 weeks during their time with UVA Orthopaedics by both faculty and residents. A composite evaluation and grade will be sent to the student’s school upon specific request of the student. The rotating student should bring their school’s extern evaluation form (if one is used) otherwise the standard University Elective Rotation Evaluation form will be used.

Students wishing to request letters of recommendation from the Department Chair (Dr. Mark Abel), or Vice Chair/Residency Program Director (Dr. A. Bobby Chhabra) should contact Mrs. Franke to arrange an interview time with the faculty.

International Students
The University of Virginia does not allow medical student clinical externships from non-LCME accredited schools at this time. Students wishing to visit as an “observer” should obtain faculty sponsorship by direct contact with an Ortho faculty member whose research interests them. Please be advised that the Orthopaedic Surgery program accepts two observer rotations per academic year (July 1 – June 30).
