Macular Degeneration Support Group
The UVA Macular Degeneration Support Group was created under the leadership of Dr. Brian Conway. The first session was held in May 2004. Dr. Conway felt strongly that the Department of Ophthalmology should provide patients with information, resources, and support outside of the medical care provided in our clinics and operating rooms.

The Department of Ophthalmology collaborated with community partners - the Virginia Department for the Blind and Vision Impaired (DBVI) and Senior Center, Inc. - to create a free monthly seminar and discussion group that would be available to all members of the community.

Support Group meetings are held from 1:30 PM - 3:00 PM on the 3rd Monday of the month from March through November.  Meetings are hosted at the Senior Center in Charlottesville, which is handicapped accessible. The meetings are free and open to the public and there is ample free parking. Refreshments are provided each month. No reservations or registrations are needed.

Many of the topics apply to anyone with low vision, including those with macular degeneration. We invite patients, family members, friends, educators and anyone with a desire to learn more to join us for our lecture and discussion sessions.

If you have a request for a certain topic or for further information please contact our coordinator:
