Clinical Ophthalmology Services

The Department of Ophthalmology houses several service units which provide comprehensive tertiary care for a variety of complex ophthalmic problems.

The Glaucoma and Anterior Segment Service handles consultations dealing with conditions of the front of the eye, including medical, laser, and surgical treatment of glaucoma, cataract and related disorders.

The Vitreo-Retinal Service handles medical and surgical conditions of the back of the eye such as retinal detachment, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, vitreous hemorrhage, vitrectomy, ocular tumors and ocular trauma.

  The Neuro-ophthalmology and Orbit Service diagnoses medical and surgical conditions of the ocular adnexa, oculomotor system, and visual pathways. This subspecialty service treats eyelid tumors, trauma, and malpositions, lacrimal obstruction (tearing), orbital inflammatory disease (including thyroid orbitopathy), orbital tumors, orbital trauma, and lid, lacrimal and orbital problems requiring reconstruction and cosmetic surgery of the lids.

The Cornea/Refractive Surgery Service handles corneal disease and corneal transplantation.

o Special Services

The General Eye Clinic provides routine ophthalmic care and evaluation as well as contact lens care; the Photography Section performs clinical ophthalmologic studies including fluorescein angiography; the Visual Function Laboratory performs visual field examination, dark adaptometry, color vision testing and ocular electrophysiology including electroretinograms (ERG) and electro-oculograms (EOG). Ultrasonography is available through both the General Eye Service (axial length measurements) and Vitreo-Retinal Service (B-scan ultrasonography).
