opeplogosmall     Info For Outreach Educators

  • Designed to be an outreach education tool for regional centers.
  • Appropriate for all disciplines including physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals.
  • Participating institutions may include public health departments, private obstetrical, family practice and pediatric offices, home health agencies, and clinics.
  • Authors have extensive experience with effective implementation methods to reach the targeted audience (see section on Implementation below).

Learning Formats used by the Program

  •  19 self-instructional modules housed in 3 books provide content on the care of high risk mothers and babies. The modules are practical guides to patient care, according to nationally accepted standards. A glossary and index can be found at the end of each book.
  • 6 skill units are described in the books, to be read by participants and then practiced at sessions organized by local or regional coordinators
  • 2 videotapes have been approved for CEU credit for nurses as adjuncts.
  • Suggestions for speakers and discussion groups are offered to regional coordinators in an optional training session (See "Training for Regional Coordinators" below) and/or in the Regional Implementation Guide . These group activities can augment the learning experience and provide times to discuss material and get feedback.

Implementation Strategy Overview

  • Entire staff of an institution benefits by taking the program together. Participants can discuss concepts and the group can consider changes in care practices or policies to improve their patient care. Regional coordinators can provide speakers or case studies at introductory and final meetings to further enrich the educational experience.
  • Local coordinators at each institution are essential to help regional staff organize the program within the institution and maintain contact. A preliminary meeting is held to train local coordinators in their role.
  • Allow adequate time. The obstetrical course (Book One) requires approximately 8-10 weeks for a group of busy practitioners to complete. An additional 6 - 8 weeks is required for the pediatric course (Books Two and Three).  Some practitioners will choose to take only parts of the program. See Timeline.

Training for Regional Coordinators for Implementation of the Program

  • Regional Outreach educators are encouraged to meet with UVA outreach team to discuss a detailed implementation strategy for their region. They can also receive a Regional Implementaton Guide which outlines effective strategies and includes sample flyers, letters, and other forms.
  •  A One-Day Training Meeting can be scheduled with UVA coordinator(s) to train one or more Regional Coordinators to offer the program in their area. See Contact Us
