  • OPEP was developed at the University of Virginia and has been in use since 1990.
  • It has been used by thousands of participants in Virginia,  North Carolina, South Carolina, Illinois and Missouri.
  • A multidisciplinary team of authors developed the content and implementation strategy  and field tested it in Virginia at multiple care sites.

  • The program is reviewed by expert reviewers and updated for content every 3-4 years. This update was last completed in 2002.
  • Pretests and posttests for each module were used to determine the efficacy of the program as an educational tool. Item analysis of all test questions was used to validate the tests as measurements of knowledge gains. Data is available by contacting the authors.
