Message from the Dean

The University of Virginia has an open and collegial atmosphere. Discrimination and harassment are not part of our profession and will not be tolerated.

The policies concerning discrimination and harassment of students are set forth in the University Policies on Non-Discrimination and Harassment and the Board of Visitors Resolution on Diversity.

In accord with these policies, there are actions we all can take to ensure a supportive, welcoming and professional environment in School of Medicine :

  1. When you hear a racial, sexist, or gender joke or comment, tell the person making it that you consider it inappropriate and unprofessional. Students reported that some faculty members do this, and students appreciate their support.
  2. Welcome all students to your course, clerkship or service, and create a comfortable environment for them.
  3. Assure both women and men that they have the same opportunities and responsibilities on your service.
  4. Welcome students as learners and realize that learners are nervous and vulnerable when they are beginning to learn something new.
  5. Assume patients can always hear what you say about them. Speak as respectfully when you are talking about patients as when you are talking to them.
  6. Work professionally with gay and lesbian students and avoid remarks that would make them uncomfortable.
  7. Treat residents kindly and professionally and they will be more likely to treat students the same way.

Faculty members and house staff set the professional environment of the School of Medicine . Let us make it an environment that encourages learning and is supportive of all students.
