Actions the Committee May Take

There are many actions that the Committee can take.  These include, but are not limited, to the following actions:

  • Meeting with the person who acted unprofessionally
  • Meeting with the person’s supervisor
  • Meeting with the clerkship or course director
  • Negotiating an apology or solution
  • Limiting future contact between the person and students
  • Keeping a record of the incident in case other incidents are reported later
  • Referring a student to the University Office of Equal Opportunity if the student wants to pursue a formal complaint of discrimination or harassment.

Students can decide that no immediate action be taken or that action be delayed until the clerkship/course is over or until the student graduates.

The Committee has been effective in making changes for future classes.  For example, one attending no longer works with students; one resident no longer gives oral exams to students.
