Who We Are

Christian A. Chisholm, M.D.

 Dr. Chisholm graduated from the University of Maryland medical school. He received his residency training at the University of Maryland and his fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine from the University of North Carolina. He is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology as well as maternal-fetal medicine. His interests include prenatal diagnosis, diabetes in pregnancy, and ultrasound. Dr. Chisholm has recently been named as one of the “Best Doctors in America”. He is widely viewed as an excellent clinician and teacher. Dr. Chisholm functions as the Director of the OB/GYN Residency Program at the University of Virginia and is the Director of the Primary Care Center.

William N. P. Herbert, M.D.

 Dr. Herbert received his medical degree from Bowman-Gray School of Medicine. He served his residency at Vanderbilt University and his fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at the University of Texas. He is certified in maternal-fetal medicine as well as obstetrics and gynecology. Dr. Herbert functions as the Chairman of the Department and has an international reputation as an extraordinary clinician and teacher. He is honored to be an oral board examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. His research interests include fetal lung maturity and medical complications of pregnancy.

Susan Lashley, M.D.

 Dr. Lashley received her medical education at the State University of New York in Brooklyn and then went on to residency and fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, New Jersey. She is an active candidate for board certification in obstetrics and gynecology and in maternal-fetal medicine. During Dr. Lashley’s residency and fellowship she received numerous clinical and education accolades. Her research interests include obesity in pregnancy and the effects of chemical pesticides during pregnancy.

Devereux N. Saller, Jr., M.S., M.D.

 Dr. Saller received his medical degree from the Jefferson Medical College. He served residency at the Reading Hospital and fellowships in maternal-fetal medicine and in genetics at the University of Maryland. He is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology, maternal-fetal medicine, and clinical genetics. Dr. Saller has an excellent reputation for clinical care and for education. He has recently been named as one of the “Best Doctors in America” and functions as an oral board examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Saller’s research interests include genetics, prenatal diagnosis, and genetic screening.

Genetic Counselors

The Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine has two dedicated prenatal genetic counselors including Logan Karns, M.S., and Karen Ventura, M.S., both of whom have been in clinical practice for over ten years, following their master’s degree training in genetic counseling. They have a wealth of experience and function as excellent resources for the medical community as well as for patients considering prenatal diagnosis.

Sonographers

The sonographers working with the perinatologists in Maternal-Fetal Medicine include Patricia Johnson, Ruth Hooper, Gay Longley and Kaaren Roberts. These extraordinarily talented sonographers provide all forms of obstetrical ultrasound including guidance for procedures. They are all involved in continuing education of residents and medical students.
