Who We Are

Susan C. Modesitt, M.D.

Associate Professor, Gynecologic Oncology, Fellowship and Division Director 

Dr. Modesitt is the Division Director as well as the Fellowship Director for Gynecologic Oncology.  She received her MD degree from the University of Virginia and then completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of North Carolina.  She completed a fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.  She joined the faculty at the University of Kentucky for 4 years before returning to the University of Virginia in 2006.  Dr. Modesitt has expertise in the diagnosis and management for women with all gynecologic malignancies and focuses on bringing new treatments from the laboratory into the clinics.  As such, she is the Principal investigator for the Gynecologic Oncology Group.  Her additional research interests include obesity related cancers, hereditary breast and ovarian cancers, minimally invasive surgery, and clinical trials.

Willie A. Andersen, M.D.

Professor, Gynecologic Oncology

 Dr. Willie A. Andersen is a Professor in Obstetrics and Gynecology, the University of Virginia, School of Medicine, who completed his training in general obstetrics and gynecology, as well as gynecologic oncology, at the University of Virginia. While his surgical expertise is well-recognized in the management of malignant and benign gynecologic diseases, he is also an expert in the medical management of these processes. Dr. Andersen leads the division in clinical trials, with his research efforts primarily focused on ovarian and cervical malignancies.

Amir A. Jazaeri, M.D.

Assistant Professor, Gynecologic Oncology

 Dr. Amir A. Jazaeri, Assistant Professor in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Virginia, completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Virginia, followed by two years of basic science research at the National Institute of Health. He then completed his fellowship in gynecologic oncology at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas. Dr. Jazaeri’s expertise in the diagnosis and management of gynecologic malignancies is well-recognized, with a special interest in caring for women with ovarian and endometrial carcinoma. He is the Director of the Gynecologic Oncology Research Laboratory, with his research efforts focused on the early diagnosis and treatment of ovarian cancer.

Peyton T. Taylor, Jr., M.D.

Professor, Gynecologic Oncology and Medical Director, The Cancer Center

 Dr. Peyton Taylor, the Richard N. and Louise Crockett Professor, is a clinically active member of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology. He completed his residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology and his fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at the University of Virginia after spending two years in Surgical Oncology at the National Cancer Institute. Dr. Taylor’s clinical focus is on ovarian cancer and he is actively involved in clinical research programs, particularly those integrating surgery and chemotherapy with immune system modulators.
