Application Requirements

We hope that this brief overview of our department has stimulated your interest to learn more.  We welcome your application to our program and can promise you that the interview day will be informative and enjoyable, and will round out your understanding of our department and the educational opportunities we offer.  We review applications as they are received, and offer 60-70 interviews.  Interviews are held November through January; you will be informed of the specific dates upon being invited to visit us.  If you should have specific questions about the program or the application requirements, please feel free to e-mail either Chris Chisholm, the residency director, at  cchisholm@virginia.edu, Michael Moxley the assistant residency director at mdm7y@virginia.edu, or Tammy Lull, Education Coordinator at tl5s@virginia.edu.

For all applicants, a complete ERAS application must be received no later than November 1.  A complete application consists of:

  • ERAS Common Application
  • Medical School Transcript
  • USMLE Transcript – we will consider all scores you submit, but Step 2 scores are NOT required to obtain an interview
  • 3 letters of recommendation, at least two of which are from ob/gyn faculty members at your School of Medicine
  • Personal statement
  • The Medical School Performance Evaluation (“Dean’s Letter”) is sent to the residency programs via ERAS on November 1.

We invite applications from graduates of osteopathic medical schools as well as overseas medical schools.  Please note the following additional requirements:

  • All applicants must follow the USMLE examination pathway, including D.O. candidates.
  • Graduates of foreign medical schools must possess a valid ECFMG certificate no later than October 1 to be considered for an interview.
  • We are only able to accept foreign medical graduates who:
    • Can demonstrate spoken and written English proficiency
    • Hold a J-1 visa or have achieved U.S. citizenship.
    • Graduated from Medical School in 2005 or more recently.
