CLAUDE MOORE HEALTH SCIENCES LIBRARY LECTURE SERIES RETURNS WITH LOCAL ACADEMY AWARD WINNER

The Claude Moore Health Sciences Library of the University of Virginia Health System will begin its' 2000-2001 History of the Health Sciences lecture series on Wednesday, October 11, from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., in the Jordan Hall Conference Center auditorium. Paul Wagner, an Academy Award winning writer, producer and director of documentaries and dramatic films, will present the first lecture Telling Stories, Telling History.

Wagner will discuss the creative challenges of telling historical stories through film and television and present clips from his films. Wagner will highlight his film, A Paralyzing Fear: The Story of Polio in America, to illustrate how filmmakers control our perceptions of the past and reality. A Paralyzing Fear won the Eric Barnouw Award for Best Historical Film of 1998 and an Emmy Award for Outstanding Research.

Wagner received an Oscar for Outstanding Short Documentary in 1984 for his film, The Stone Carvers. The film portrays the work of traditional Italian-American artisans as they carve gargoyle statues on The National Cathedral in Washington, DC.

All lectures are free and open to the public. The next presentation in the History of the Health Sciences lecture series will be given on Wednesday, November 29, by Dr. Ann G. Carmichael, associate professor of history at the University of Indiana.

The History of the Health Sciences lecture series is sponsored each year by the Claude Moore Health Sciences Library and the University of Virginia School of Medicine's Continuing Medical Education Program as an educational service for the University of Virginia Health System and interested citizens in the community.
