U.VA. SCHOOL OF MEDICINE APPOINTS NEW CHAIRMAN TO OVERSEE OBSTETRICS AND GYNECOLOGY DEPARTMENTDr. William Herbert has been named the William Norman Thornton Professor and Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Virginia.Herbert's appointment, which took effect January 1, was announced by Dr. Robert M. Carey, dean of the School of Medicine. Dr. Herbert is a highly recognized leader in maternal-fetal medicine, Carey said. He brings high energy to our obstetrics and gynecology service. We anticipate that our women's health programs will be an increasing asset to our community under his leadership. Herbert, who was born in Greensboro, NC, was professor and director of the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Duke University Medical Center from 1992 to 1999. He also served as professor of the pediatrics department from 1997 to 1999. Herbert is a member of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and serves as a general examiner and maternal-fetal medicine subspecialty examiner. He is also a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, where he has served as chair and member of numerous committees. He has served as president of the North Carolina Obstetrical and Gynecological Society and the national Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics (APGO). Since 1996, Herbert has chaired the APGO's National Teaching Scholars Program. Herbert's research focuses primarily on the assessment of fetal lung development in pregnancy, and medical complications of pregnancy. I am very excited about assuming this new role in a department with such a wonderful national reputation, Herbert said. I look forward to working with many others to further its mission of providing superb clinical care and scholarship.
