U.VA. HEALTH SYSTEM RECOGNIZES FEBRUARY AS HEART MONTH

Heart disease is the number one killer of Americans, claiming nearly 500,000 victims each year. The University of Virginia Heart Center is recognizing February as Heart Month by offering a series of free public lectures, screenings and special events.

Registration is required for all events. Refreshments and free parking will be provided. Highlights of scheduled events include:

  • Women at Risk – A discussion with Dr. Dearing Johns, professor of cardiology, about the alarming number of undiagnosed heart disease cases in women and how risk factors, symptoms, and diagnosis may be different from that of men. Thursday, February 3, 11 am to 12 pm, at Manorhouse at University Village

  • Heart-Healthy Eating Made Easy – An evening with a registered dietitian to learn about the latest research in lipid management and enjoy a low fat cooking demonstration. Free food samples, menus, recipes and discount coupons for a nutritional consultation will be offered. Tuesday, February 8, 7 pm to 8:30 pm, at Boar's Head Inn

  • Advances in the Diagnosis of Heart Disease – A lecture on innovative tests now available for diagnosing coronary artery disease and other new directions in heart research with Dr. Christopher Kramer, professor of radiology. Saturday, February 19, 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm at the U.Va. Cardiovascular Health & Fitness Center at Berkmar

  • Heart Attack Response Training – Three sessions about recognizing symptoms of a heart attack and how to respond. Emergency Care Center staff will answer questions and offer CPR demonstrations. Saturday, February 26, 9 am to 11 am, 11 am to 1 pm, OR 1 pm to 3 pm, at the U.Va. Northridge facility on Ivy Road
