U.VA. MEDICAL SCHOOL STUDENT AWARDED BOWMAN SCHOLARSHIP

The C. Richard Bowman Memorial Scholarship at the University of Virginia School of Medicine has been awarded to medical student Subinoy “Shu” Das of Charlottesville, Va.

The fourth-year medical student will receive a year’s tuition and fees. Das was selected for his integrity, enthusiasm and genuine compassion for the ill - qualities that distinguished the late Dr. Bowman. Bowman was a Staunton native who graduated from the U.Va. School of Medicine in 1974 and died in a sailing accident in 1977. The award is presented annually.

Das received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia with an Interdisciplinary Major in Religion and Economics. Upon completion of medical school, Das would like to become an otolaryngologist. In his spare time, he likes to travel and collect postcards, play pool and softball and make furniture. In February 2001, Das will participate in the U.Va. Curry School of Education Saturday Enrichment Program, teaching gifted second and third grade children about science and medicine.

The scholarship will be presented on Monday, October 30, at the Bowman Lecture, “Antibiotic Prophylaxis for Endocarditis,” given by Dr. Matthew E. Levison, chief of the Division of Infectious Disease and professor of medicine and public health at Hahnemann University in Philadelphia, Pa. Das is the 23rd recipient of the Bowman Scholarship.

Members of the U.Va. medical faculty select five fourth-year students to be Bowman Scholars each year, one of whom receives the Memorial Scholarship. Other Bowman Scholars selected were Christine Michele Burt of Harrisonburg, Va.; Jodi Michelle Eisner of New York, N.Y.; Stefan Alexander Hura of Westlake Village, Calif.; and Amy Beth Saroff of Richmond, Va.
