Ten U.Va. Medical Specialities Ranked in U.S. News & World Report's Best Hospitals

Ten medical specialties at the University of Virginia Health System are listed in U.S. News & World Report's 10th annual guide to America's Best Hospitals, including two newcomers – cardiology and heart surgery and geriatrics. The magazine is due on the newsstands on Monday, July 12.

According to the magazine's editors, any institution listed among the top 50 medical centers in any specialty should be considered a leading center.

U.Va. departments and divisions listed in the new guide and their rankings are: endocrinology (hormonal disorders), 5; cancer, 12; otolaryngology (ear, nose and throat), 16; neurology and neurosurgery, 17; urology, 19; gastroenterology (digestive tract), 22; cardiology and heart surgery, 25; pulmonary medicine (respiratory disorders), 28; gynecology, 30; and geriatrics, 50.

This year, U.S. News ranked the top 50 hospitals in 12 specialties. These specialties were assessed using a three-part model that combines reputation, death rate and a set of other medical data: cancer; cardiology and heart surgery; digestive tract; ear, nose and throat; geriatrics; gynecology; hormonal disorders; neurology and neurosurgery; orthopedics; respiratory disorders; rheumatology and urology. Hospitals were ranked in four other specialties – eyes, pediatrics, psychiatry and rehabilitation – by reputation alone; death rates for these specialties were unavailable or irrelevant.

We're delighted that our departments continue to receive such national recognition, said Dr. Robert W. Cantrell, vice president and provost for the health system. We also feel that many of our departments provide the quality of care exemplified by these listings. All of this reaffirms our focus on giving the best possible care to all those we serve.
