NOBEL PRIZE WINNER PRESENTS SPECIAL MINI-MED SCHOOL LECTURE

What do blood pressure, dynamite and the Nobel Prize have in common? Find out by attending a special Mini-Med School lecture, Beyond the Nobel Prize: A Journey of Discovery, on Saturday, Oct. 23. The free lecture, which is sponsored by the University of Virginia School of Medicine, is from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at U.Va.'s Newcomb Hall Theater.

Dr. Ferid Murad, winner of the 1998 Nobel Prize in Medicine, will describe his adventures in medical science, a journey that has produced one of the most significant discoveries about the cardiovascular system in the last two decades. Murad's work, which was conducted at U.Va. from 1970 to 1983, provided the foundation for new drugs for hypertension in adults, treatment of prematurity in infants and the treatment for impotence.

A discussion period will follow Murad's presentation and will be moderated by David Brautigan, director of the U.Va. Markey Center for Cell Signaling. The special Mini-Med School lecture is supported by an educational grant from Pfizer, Inc.

Although the lecture is free and open to the public, registration is required by Friday, Oct. 15. To register or for more information, call 804-924-5839.
