National Leader in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine to Lead Internal Medicine Division at University of Virginia Health System
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., December 19, 2005 -- Robert M. Strieter, M.D., one of the nation’s top pulmonary clinicians and scientists, has been appointed Chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine of the University of Virginia Health System. Dr. Strieter comes to UVa. from the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he currently serves as professor of medicine, pathology, pediatrics, chief of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine and vice chair of the Department of Medicine for Hospitalist Programs. Dr. Strieter will begin his appointment on July 1, 2006.
Dr. Strieter is known internationally for his research in four areas: lung cancer, pulmonary fibrosis, acute lung injury and lung transplantation. Strieter is currently the principal investigator of a National Institutes of Health (NIH) supported specialized center of research on the pathobiology of pulmonary fibrosis. In addition, he is currently principal investigator of two investigator initiated NIH supported grants, a training grant in pulmonary and critical care medicine, and a project leader on a specialized program of excellence in lung cancer from the NIH/National Cancer Institute.

His interest in lung cancer will add perfectly to our outstanding cancer center.”
Dr. Strieter received his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan and his medical degree from Michigan State University. After completing his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Dr. Strieter performed his fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care at the University of Michigan. He then was a faculty member at the University of Michigan School of Medicine before joining UCLA.
“I am looking forward to coming to the Commonwealth of Virginia and leading a department which has a well deserved national reputation for connecting leading edge research with practical patient applications,” said Dr. Strieter.
Dr. Strieter has authored over five hundred publications including peer-reviewed journal articles, editorial commentary, reviews, book chapters and books. Dr. Strieter currently holds seven patents with seven additional patent applications under review.
He has received numerous awards including the Recognition for Scientific Accomplishments Award from the American Thoracic Society and the Marvin I. Schwarz Research Award from the Coalition for Pulmonary Fibrosis.
Dr. Strieter has served as a mentor to over 30 research fellows within the disciplines of Internal Medicine, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Pediatrics, Surgery, Pathology, Hematology/Oncology, Cardiology, and Gastroenterology.
Additionally, Dr. Strieter is a member of the American College of Physicians (Fellow), the American Association of Immunologists, the American College of Chest Physicians (Fellow), the American Society for Investigative Pathology, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Thoracic Society, the American Society for Clinical Investigation, and the American Associate of Physicians.
