WOMEN’S 4-MILER RAISES THOUSANDS FOR CANCER PATIENTS

Dec. 3, 2004  -- The financial results are in. The 2004 Charlottesville Women’s Four Miler on September 4th at Foxfield generated a lot more than smiles and sore muscles—it raised more than $50,000 in donations to the University of Virginia Cancer Center. The race proceeds will now go to several important programs for cancer patients, including:

  • the ten-week exercise and nutrition program (incorporating exercise, nutrition and stress management helps cancer patients feel less fatigue, get better rest, control their weight and improve their mood)
  • the Getting Stronger exercise video designed to improve strength and flexibility as well as introduce light aerobic and relaxation exercises to women who’ve had cancer
  • the Self-Help Book for breast cancer patients, now in its third edition, provided free to breast cancer patients in the Charlottesville community and
  • Ramona’s Room, which provides wigs, hair, and turbans to cancer patients free of charge

“These programs impact the health and quality of life of many people who are going through difficult diagnosis and treatments. The programs would not be possible without support from the Women’s Four-Miler,” said Diane Cole, Education Coordinator at the U.Va. Cancer Center .  “Over the years, hundreds (and possibly thousands) of women have started running because of this event and the training program that precedes it.”

The Four-Miler was hosted by the Charlottesville Track Club and directed by Cynthia Lorenzoni. More than 1,500 women took part this year.

Race sponsors included: Scarpa, Z95, Volvo of Charlottesville, Hamilton ’s at First and Main , Nike and The Needle Lady. Other supporters included Shenandoah Valley Water, Foxfield, Allied, The Daily Progress, Ragged Mountain Running Shop, Pepsi Cola Bottling of Central Virginia and the Piedmont Unit of the Virginia Chapter of the American Massage Therapy Association.
