U.Va. CARDIOLOGY AND HEART SURGERY AGAIN NAMED ONE OF TOP 100 CARDIOVASCULAR HOSPITALS IN AMERICA
For the second consecutive year, The University of Virginia cardiology and heart surgery program has been selected as one of the 100 Top Hospitals: Cardiovascular Benchmarks for Success Study, sponsored by healthcare products company Solucient, LLC. For six years, the Solucient 100 Top Hospitals: Cardiovascular Benchmarks for Success study has identified hospitals setting benchmark levels of performance for cardiovascular services throughout the nation. This ranking, which is specific to cardiology and cardiac surgery services, is part of the Solucient 100 Top Hospitals initiative, developed in 1993.
According to Solucient, this year’s winning hospitals have displayed superior performance in the clinical management of cardiovascular disease through the efforts of their medical management teams, employees, medical staffs and administrative leadership. The benchmark study was developed to identify high performing cardiovascular hospitals at a national level, and to set performance targets for clinical treatment and management of this high risk, high cost and high volume specialty. To qualify, heart centers in hospitals had to have performed well across seven performance areas that indicate high-quality outcomes and efficient management of care.
The study cited differences between teaching hospitals and community hospitals, noting that teaching hospitals, of which U.Va. is one, had 12 percent fewer deaths than other teaching hospitals outside of the Top 100 list.
The Solucient study also showed that if Medicare inpatients received the same level of care as those in this year’s 100 top cardiovascular hospitals list:
- An additional 4,200 patients could survive each year.
- Nearly 1,600 patient complications would be avoided annually.
